2003 CALTECH PENTATHLON SHINES

 

It was another gorgeous Pasadena day on Sunday, March 9, for the annual Caltech Pentathlon swim meet.   147 swimmers took to the water to compete in five races;   a 50 yard swim of each stroke (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle) and the 100 individual medley.   The total times were added together to determine the winners.   There were many fast swims for this early season meet, with folks starting to get in form for the push to Nationals in Tempe in May.

 

The women were paced by youngster Andrea Trufasu of SCAQ, who had the fastest times in four of the five events and the fastest overall time of 3:00.14.  Andrea was clocked with the following times:  50 fly – 27.08, 50 breast – 34.47, 50 free – 24.70, and 100 I.M. 1:3.88.  Needless to say, Andrea placed first in the 19-24 year old age group.   Victoria Davidson of San Diego, winner of the 30-34 age group, had the fastest 50 back time of 29.55.   The closest competition was between Kaylay Vernallis of Caltech and Traci Granger of LAPS, with Kaylay edging Traci for first place in the 40-44 age group by 1.6 seconds.  The senior ladies were lead by Maurine Kornfield of Coast Masters in the 80-84 age group, Grace Altus of Santa Barbara in the 75-79 age group, and Cynthia Rosik of Grants Pass, Oregon, in the 70-74 age group.

 

For the men, the 30-34 year old age group was particularly fast, with top honors going to Craig Crawford of SWM with a cumulative time of 2:34.81.  Craig had the fastest times for the 50 breast, 27.18, and 100 I.M., 54.28.   Second place in the 30-34 age group went to Dan Wegner, who had the fastest 50 back time, 25.90.  The fastest 50 fly, 24.56, belonged to Todd Shillington of DSSM in the 40-44 age group.   In that same age group, Stanley Fujimoto swam the fastest 50 free, 21.73.  The closest competition was in the 45-49 age group, with Gerard Von Hoffman of NOVA touching out Jim Belardi of SCAQ by 0.21 seconds to win top honors.  The senior men were lead by Woody Bowersock (85-89), Jurgen Schmidt (80-84), and George Brinton, (75-79).  Each won all five races in his age group.

 

 Next year will be the 30^th annual Caltech Pentathlon, and we hope that everyone will be able to attend this fun meet.
