Minutes of the May 22, 2003 SPMA Meeting, Pasadena CA
 
Call to order: 8:10PM, by Chair Wayne McCauley
 
Attendance: Lucy Johnson (UCI), Tom Trapp (LBSC), Trish Commons (DSSM), Greg Mitchell (SCM), Jeff Moxie (DSSM),
 Julie Heather (UNAT), Michael Heather (UNAT), Jessica Seaton (WH2O), Errol Graham (WH2O), Steve Schofield (SWM), 
Mark Moore (MVN), Wayne McCauley (SLUG), Shannon Sullivan (SBM).
 
Introductions were made around the room, welcoming Greg Mitchell of Santa Clarita.
 
MSP approved the minutes of March 13, 2003, with the corrected club abbreviations as follows: 
Coast Masters should be CM; Daland should be DSSM; and SWAM should be SWM.
 
Chairman's Report: The Southern Pacific region and SPMA has been approached to host a National Championship either SCY or LCM for 2005.
 We encourage bidding for 2005 USMS National Championships, and was informed that Mission Viejo is preparing a bid.
 
Request for an "at large" delegate for September's USMS Convention in San Diego. This was tabled to discuss under Old Business.
 
Vice Chair's Report: Our LCM season is ahead: June 7th Las Vegas, July 12th Santa Barbara, August 9,10,11th Mission Viejo Regional Championships
, with a social to be held on Friday August 8th. Meet forms are available on our website by clicking on www.spma.net . USMS National Championships
 will be held at Rutgers University in New Jersey, August 13-17th, entries are due by July 9th. For more detailed information click on www.usms.org
 
SCM season is soon approaching! You can get a jump on the season by attending the IGLA SCM meet
scheduled for August 21-24th at Stanford. http://www.igla2003.org
 
There are no SPMA meets in September. There is a Zone meet with Arizona scheduled for (I need the dates in October and website details to insert)
 Mission Viejo will host their meet on October 19th, with UCLA scheduled for November 8th, and the infamous Turkey Shoot Pierce College on
 November 23rd. We are asking for bids for SCM Regionals to be held December 12,13,14th.
 
The USMS National Convention will be held Sept 10-14th in San Diego. We encourage all our LMSCs to take advantage of this
opportunity in  attending some of the meetings. Go to the USMS website and catch up on what your national organization is
 doing for you and what this legislation year is all  about. SPMA's Convention Registration fees are due in August and will be
 handled by Jeff Moxie.
 
Secretary's Report: Mary Hull was absent.
 
Treasurer's Report: Jeff Moxie reported that we are down 15-20% from last year. He filed our 2002 tax returns on May 11th.

Member at Large Report: Errol Graham announced that the Aussie film, "Swimming Upstream", featuring Geoffrey Rush ("Shine")
 and Judy Davis ("My Brilliant Career") will be released sometime this year.
 
Registrar's Report: Julie Heather reported that she is still working on the SCY Top 10 and Records. She continues to inform
 swimmers about  the our SPMA Newsletter which is an insert in SWIM magazine. She researched a great conference calling plan
 by COSTCO, offering up to 16 lines. We have 500 new Masters Swimming brochures available from USMS, and can get more
 for the cost of postage. On the back there is a space which allows each LMSC to stamp or imprint their local information.
 Julie has offered to make business cards for committee members. Also she requested purchasing 500 regular and 2000 window
 envelopes. MSP to sign up for the calling plan, order brochures, a SPMA stamp, and business envelopes. Please note Julie's
 full report is posted on the website.
 
Sports Medicine: Jessica Seaton has written an article on Glucosamine, to be published in the July/August issue of the newsletter.
 
Open Water Report: Lucy Johnson reviewed the present open water schedule with Julie Heather and Shannon Sullivan. 
She presented the current ocean swim schedule as seen on SPMA.net and SWIM.net. There were a few inconsistencies
 which will be ironed out by Julie Heather. Seventy-five award medals will be ordered for the 2002/2003 SPMA Ocean
 Series with the $500.00 allocated for award medals. MSP for SPMA 2003 Ocean Race Series. 
 
Awards: Frank Piemme (OJAI) and Karen Melick (SCAQ) were awarded 2002 Swimmers of the Year. The 2002 SPMA Coach 
of the Year was presented to Carol Shigaki (WH2O), at the SCY Regional meet at UCI.
 
Old Business:  Tom Trapp is an elected delegate from SPMA. SPMA will request that Bekah Wright be given voting status at
 convention, as an At Large Delegate, but we will pay for her to go even if she isn't a voting delegate. After reviewing the list
 from previously published minutes, including guidelines from February 1999, as well as reviewing the qualifications for
 delegate attendees, it was determined that a procedural error had occurred.
 
Michael Heather's Legislation Proposal to eliminate the Zone Committee was discussed. MSP for Michael to submit
 his proposal to the SPMA committee via email, by July 1st, for a vote.
 
New Business: The Registrar/Top Ten contract is due for renewal. Bid specs are available to view on the website
. Julie Heather will email out with comments back from the committee. LMSCs must submit by email to the any
 proposed changes to the Legislation, Rules and Long Distance Committee chairs as appropriate by July 10, 2003.
 Shannon Sullivan was nominated to head the Nomination Committee for our SPMA 2003 elections. She will als
 write an article on sun protection for the SPMA newsletter. The review of the USMS Officials Certification
 Procedures was tabled until the next meeting.
 
Since there is so much to do prior to September's convention we will have a conference call on July 17th, at
 8:00 p.m. PDT, with dial-in instructions to follow.
